HISTORIC TAX CREDITS

AND HOUSE HISTORY

EMMA C. hAMLET HOUSE

SAVANNAH, GA

Built in 1856 and recorded in Emma Hamlet’s name, this home tells the story of carpenter and builder John Hamlet—community leader, fire captain, and later Savannah alderman. From “Hamlet’s Brick Row” to street paving projects, Hamlet left a lasting mark on the city.

Originally 99½ Barnard, the home evolved over time—expanding, adapting to tenants, and even surviving an attempted burglary in 1867. Today, 705 Barnard Street stands as a layered piece of Savannah’s history, reflecting nearly 170 years of change.

After suffering from years of neglect, the house had entirely missing windows and significant moisture damage that had left exposed lathe and ceiling framing members. Using the federal and state historic tax incentives, the building was rehabilitated according to the Secretary of the Interior's Standards in 2025.

Ethos filed both tax incentive applications and researched and compiled a history of the house for the owner.
